धरती पर जो इन्सान पैदा होता है, उसे एक दिन छोड़ कर जाना पड़ता है। वैष्णव ग्रंथ गरूड़ पुराण दो भागों में विभाजित है। पहले भाग में विष्णु भक्ति का वर्णन है और दूसरे भाग में प्रेत कल्प से लेकर नरक तक का संपूर्ण वृतांत है। जब किसी हिंदू की मृत्यु हो जाती है, उसके बाद गरूड़ पुराण को पढ़ने का विधान है। बहुत सारे लोगों में ये गलत धारणा है की इस ग्रंथ को केवल मृत्यु के बाद पढ़ा जाता है लेकिन ऐसा नहीं है। जीवनकाल में इस ग्रंथ को पढ़ने से पाप-पुण्य, नरक-स्वर्ग का ज्ञान पूर्ण रूप से प्राप्त होता है। इस पुराण से जाना जा सकता है की कैसे होती है किसी भी व्यक्ति की मौत।

गरुड़ पुराण के अनुसार जब किसी प्राणी की मृत्यु का समय पास आता है तो यमराज के दो दूत मरन अवस्था में पड़े प्राणी के पास आ जाते हैं। पापी मनुष्य को यम के दूतों से भय लगता है। जिन लोगों ने जीवन भर अच्छे कर्म किए होते हैं उन्हें मरने के समय अपने सामने दिव्य प्रकाश दिखता है और उन्हें मृत्यु से भय नहीं लगता। सत्यवादी, आस्तिक, किसी का दिल न दुखाने वाले, धर्म के पथ पर चलने वाले लोगों की मृत्यु सुखद होती है। जो दूसरों में गलत धारणाएं फैलाकर उन्हें गलत पथ पर चलने के लिए प्रेरित करते हैं, वह अंत समय में दर्द भरी मृत्यु प्राप्त करते हैं।संसार की कोई भी चीज अंत समय में साथ जाने वाली नहीं है। जब जीवन में प्रकाश सब ओर से लुप्त हो जाए और अंधकार में इन्सान को कुछ न सूझे तो उस समय आत्मा की ज्योति सर्वोपरि होती है। हमारी आत्मा हमें विपत्तियों में, तनाव में, पथरीले मार्ग पर व हर मोड़ पर सदैव सच्चा रास्ता दिखाने को तत्पर रहती है। आत्मा जैसा निश्चल, स्वच्छ, शुभ्र प्रकाश इस पृथ्वी में अन्य कहीं भी विद्यमान नहीं है।जब आत्मा का स्वरूप समझ में आ जाएगा तो जीवन की सभी पहेलियां सुलझ जाएंगी। आत्मा कभी भी मरती नहीं है, लेकिन जब तक आप आत्मभाव में नहीं आ जाते, आपको मृत्यु का डर बना रहेगा। जब मृत्यु के बारे पुराण से पता करेगे तो मौत से डरना कम हो जायेगा|
